چکیده

Very high resolution (R ∼ 160000) absorption line measurements of the interstellar Ca ii K and Na i D lines and medium resolution (R ∼ 50000) measurements of the interstellar Ti ii (3384 Å) line towards three Galactic halo stars are presented. The data have signal-to-noise ratios of ∼ 90–240. The sightlines studied clearly show several intermediate-high velocity interstellar clouds with local standard of rest velocities in the range ∼ −40 to −110 km s−1. Two different methods have been used to analyze these data. Line profile fitting allows us to model multiple components for the different high-velocity clouds separated by only a few km s−1. The close proximity of the lines in velocity space indicates that the cloudlets are related. Conversion of the absorption profiles to apparent optical depth profiles also allows us to examine the column densities and their ratios as a function of velocity. Variations in N(Ca ii)/N(Na i), N(Ca ii)/N(Ti ii) and N(Ti ii)/N(Na i) with cloud velocity are discussed.

DISTANCES TO GALACTIC HIGH-VELOCITY CLOUDS. I. COHEN STREAM, COMPLEX GCP, CLOUD g1

The highand intermediate-velocity interstellar clouds (HVCs/IVCs) are tracers of energetic processes in and around the Milky Way. Clouds with near-solar metallicity about 1 kpc above the disk trace the circulation of material between disk and halo (the Galactic fountain). TheMagellanic Stream consists of gas tidally extracted from the SMC, tracing the dark matter potential of the Milky Way. Sev...

The Escape of Ionizing Photons from the Galaxy

The Magellanic Stream and several high velocity clouds have now been detected in optical line emission. The observed emission measures and kinematics are most plausibly explained by photoionization due to hot, young stars in the Galactic disk. The highly favorable orientation of the Stream allows an unambiguous determination of the fraction of ionizing photons fesc which escape the disk. We hav...

We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) and Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) observations of interstellar ultraviolet absorption lines in the Galactic high-velocity cloud Complex C and the Intermediate Velocity Arch (IV Arch) in direction of the quasar PG1259+593 (l = 120. 6, b = +58. 1). Absorption lines from C ii, N i, N ii, O i, Al ii, Si ii, P ii, S ii, Ar i, Fe ...

Local Interstellar Matter : The Apex Cloud Priscilla

Several nearby individual low column density interstellar cloudlets have been identified based on kinematical features evident in high-resolution Ca observations near the Sun. One of these cloudlets, the ‘Apex Cloud” (AC), is within 5 pc of the Sun in the solar apex direction. The question of which interstellar cloud will constitute the next galactic environment of the Sun in principle can be d...

Molecular Hydrogen in High-Velocity Clouds

We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) observations of interstellar molecular hydrogen (H2) in two Galactic high-velocity clouds (HVCs). Molecular hydrogen absorption is detected in the Magellanic Stream (abundance ∼ 0.3 solar) toward the Seyfert galaxy Fairall 9 in the lowest three rotational states (J = 0− 2) at vLSR = +190 kms , yielding a total H2 column density of log N(H...
